The mature foliage is very dark, close to black, with a high shine. New leaflets emerge bright green and darken as they age. Each leaflet is around 5 to 8cm long and sits closely along the stem.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003chr\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eGrowth and size\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe plant grows from thick underground rhizomes, pushing up new stems from the base. Each new stem rises as a single spear and unrolls its leaflets as it lengthens, starting green before deepening to its dark colour. Indoors it reaches around 50 to 80cm tall and widens as more stems form. It grows slowly, adding a few stems a year, with most of that through the New Zealand growing season, October to April.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003chr\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNew growth:\u003c\/strong\u003e New stems always emerge bright green and darken over several weeks.
