The plant was originally described under the genus Calathea, which for a long time served as a large catch-all group within Marantaceae. In 2012, a major molecular study by Finn Borchsenius and colleagues, published in Systematic Botany, used DNA sequence analysis to redraw the boundaries of Calathea. Their work showed that the genus as traditionally defined was not a natural grouping. Around 250 species were transferred to Goeppertia, including orbifolia. The correct botanical name is now Goeppertia orbifolia (Linden) Borchs. & S.Suárez, though the name Calathea orbifolia remains widely used in the houseplant trade and is unlikely to disappear any time soon.
The genus Goeppertia is named in honour of Johann Heinrich Robert Göppert (1800 to 1884), a German botanist and palaeontologist based at the University of Breslau. Göppert made foundational contributions to the study of fossil plants and was among the first to demonstrate the presence of plant cells in coal, settling a long-running debate about the organic origins of coal deposits.
The species name "orbifolia" comes from the Latin orbis (circle or round) and folia (leaves). It means, simply, "round-leaved."
Common names include round-leaf calathea and round-leaf prayer plant. In New Zealand and Australia, it is almost universally sold as Calathea orbifolia.
Natural Origins and Habitat
Goeppertia orbifolia is endemic to Brazil, where it occurs in the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) of the eastern coast. Its range is concentrated in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo, though exact distribution records are limited because the plant grows in remote and increasingly fragmented forest.
The Atlantic Forest is one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. It originally stretched along the entire eastern seaboard of Brazil, from Rio Grande do Norte in the north to Rio Grande do Sul in the south, covering more than 1.3 million square kilometres. Today, roughly 12 percent of the original forest remains, largely in disconnected fragments. This makes the native habitat of Goeppertia orbifolia genuinely threatened.
Within the forest, the plant grows as an understorey species beneath the dense canopy of taller trees. History in Cultivation
Calathea orbifolia entered the houseplant trade relatively recently compared to other members of the family. While some Calathea species were collected by European botanists in the 19th century, orbifolia remained obscure until the early 2000s, when the global houseplant market began expanding rapidly.
The plant was first described by Jean Jules Linden, a Belgian botanist and plant explorer who was instrumental in introducing many tropical species to European horticulture during the 19th century. However, it was not until tissue culture propagation became widely available that orbifolia could be produced at commercial scale. By the 2010s, it had become one of the most sought-after Calathea varieties, partly because of its large, distinctive leaves and partly because of the growing popularity of prayer plants as a group.
In New Zealand, Calathea orbifolia became widely available through specialist importers around 2018 to 2020, coinciding with a surge in houseplant interest. It is now stocked by most indoor plant retailers, typically in 12 cm and 14 cm nursery pots. Prices have come down considerably from the early days, when it was sold as a collector's plant, and it is now accessible as a mid-range houseplant.

Leaf Structure and the Silver Pattern
The most striking feature of Calathea orbifolia is its leaf patterning. The alternating bands of silver-green and dark green are not caused by pigmentation alone. The silver areas contain air pockets between the upper and lower layers of the leaf (the palisade and spongy mesophyll). One leading theory is that it reduces water loss overnight by orienting leaves vertically, which reduces the surface area exposed to air currents. Calathea orbifolia grows from a rhizome, a horizontal underground stem that sends up new shoots at intervals. This is how the plant spreads in the wild, forming clumps on the forest floor. It does not climb, trail, or produce aerial roots.
The roots themselves are relatively fine and shallow, adapted to the loose, organic-rich soil of the forest floor. They are not aggressive growers. The plant expands outward slowly, producing new shoots from the rhizome rather than filling the pot with a dense root mass. This is worth knowing when repotting: handle the roots gently, and do not be alarmed if the root system looks modest relative to the size of the leaves.
Flowering and Reproduction

Light
In its native habitat, Goeppertia orbifolia receives 1 to 5 percent of full sunlight. Indoors, this translates to medium indirect light. In a New Zealand home, an east-facing window provides good morning light without the intensity of afternoon sun. A spot one to two metres back from a north-facing window also works well.
The plant will tolerate lower light conditions, but growth will slow and the silver patterning may become less pronounced. It will not tolerate direct sunlight. Potting Mix
The ideal mix is moisture-retentive but free-draining. A good recipe for New Zealand growers is two parts quality potting mix (any reputable brand rated to NZS 3743), one part perlite, and one part coco coir or fine orchid bark.
The potting mix provides nutrients and structure. The perlite creates air pockets for drainage and root aeration. The coir or bark holds moisture without becoming waterlogged. Together, they approximate the loose, organic-rich soil of the forest floor.
Avoid mixes with large amounts of peat, which compacts over time and can become hydrophobic (water-repelling) when it dries out completely. If you notice water running straight through the pot without being absorbed, the mix has likely become hydrophobic and should be replaced.

Over-fertilising causes salt buildup in the soil, which damages the fine roots and leads to brown leaf margins that can be confused with humidity issues. If in doubt, under-feed rather than over-feed. The plant is not a heavy feeder.
Do not fertilise during winter (May to September). The plant is resting, and nutrients applied during this period sit in the soil unused, increasing the risk of salt damage.
Repotting
Repot every one to two years, ideally in early spring (September to October in New Zealand). Signs that a plant needs repotting include roots emerging from drainage holes, water running straight through the pot, and growth slowing despite good conditions.
Increase pot size by only one increment (for example, from a 14 cm pot to a 17 cm pot). Calathea orbifolia does not like sitting in a large volume of wet soil. A pot that is too big stays wet for too long in the centre, creating conditions for root rot.
Handle the rhizome and roots gently during repotting. The roots are fine and break easily. Do not shake off all the old soil. Gently loosen the outer roots and place the plant in fresh mix at the same depth it was growing before.
Propagation
The only reliable method for home growers is division of the rhizome. This is best done during repotting in early spring.
Remove the plant from its pot and gently separate the rhizome into sections, each with at least two or three leaves and a healthy portion of roots. Use a clean, sharp knife if the sections do not separate easily by hand. Pot each division into a small pot with fresh mix, water gently, and keep in a warm, humid spot out of direct light for several weeks while the roots establish.
New divisions are vulnerable to stress. They may droop or lose a leaf or two in the first few weeks. This is normal. Resist the urge to overwater. Keep the soil lightly moist but not wet, and avoid fertilising until you see new growth.
Calathea orbifolia cannot be propagated from leaf cuttings or stem cuttings. It must be divided at the rhizome.
Growth Rate and Size Expectations
In good conditions, expect two to four new leaves during the New Zealand growing season (October to April). Growth slows or stops entirely over winter. This is a moderately slow grower compared to plants like Pothos or Monstera deliciosa.
A mature plant in a 14 cm pot typically reaches 50 to 70 cm tall and wide. With annual repotting into progressively larger pots, a well-grown specimen can eventually reach 80 to 100 cm across, with individual leaves exceeding 30 cm in diameter.
Leaf size increases as the plant matures. Early leaves on a young plant may be 10 to 15 cm across. As the rhizome strengthens and the root system develops, each successive leaf tends to come out slightly larger. This progressive growth is one of the pleasures of keeping this plant long-term.
Common Problems and Solutions
Most problems with Calathea orbifolia come down to one of three things: humidity, water quality, or temperature. The plant communicates stress through its leaves, and once you learn to read the signs, troubleshooting becomes straightforward.
Brown, crispy leaf edges
This is the most common complaint. It is almost always caused by low humidity, though it can also result from fluoride or chlorine in tap water. Increase ambient humidity to 60 percent or above and switch to filtered or rainwater if the problem persists. Brown edges will not heal, but new growth should come through clean.
Yellow leaves
Usually a sign of overwatering. Check that the pot has adequate drainage and that you are allowing the top layer of soil to dry between waterings. If the soil smells sour or the roots are soft and brown, root rot has set in. Remove affected roots, repot in fresh mix, and reduce watering frequency.
Curling leaves
This can mean underwatering, cold draughts, or very low humidity. Check the soil moisture first. If the soil is dry, water thoroughly. If the soil is moist, look for draughts from windows or doors, or check that the room temperature has not dropped below 15 degrees overnight.
Spider mites
These tiny pests thrive in dry air, which makes Calathea orbifolia particularly vulnerable in winter when indoor humidity drops. Look for fine webbing on the undersides of leaves and tiny specks that move when disturbed. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth regularly. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Increasing humidity is both treatment and prevention.
Fungus gnats
Small flying insects around the soil surface indicate fungus gnats. They are attracted to consistently moist soil. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Yellow sticky traps placed at soil level catch the adults, and a thin layer of sand or perlite on the soil surface prevents larvae from developing.
