Light is the one thing about a room you cannot change. Start with how much of it you have, then choose from what will actually hold up there.
Low light
2 plantsAway from windows, or a room that only gets south-facing light. These cope without stretching or dropping leaves.
Medium, indirect light
4 plantsA metre or two back from a window, or behind a sheer curtain. This is the largest group.
Bright, indirect light
4 plantsNear a north-facing window, or an east or west one, out of direct midday sun. In New Zealand north is the brightest aspect. Colour and variegation hold best here.
