Philodendron

Mamei

Size
The draw here is the silver marbling, splashed over deep green in a pattern that comes out different on every leaf. It is a climber, so the leaves get bigger the higher it goes, and this one is already established on a coir pole. Of the silver-leaved philodendrons it is one of the more forgiving to keep.

Philodendron mamei has broad heart-shaped leaves in mid to deep green, marked with irregular silver patches that sit between the veins. The surface is quilted, puckering slightly along each vein line, and the edges are gently ruffled. Leaf stalks are pale green flushed with red near the base. Mature leaves reach around 30 to 45cm long.

Growth & size

It is a creeping climber, running along a surface or up a support with aerial roots down the stem. New leaves come out a lighter green with the silver marking already showing, and each one is larger than the last as the plant gains height. Indoors it gets to around 60cm to 1m on a pole and spreads about as wide. It grows over the New Zealand growing season from October to April and slows over winter. This one comes already established on a coir pole.
