Stripestar

Size
A prayer plant with deep green leaves feathered in pale silver, and solid wine purple undersides that turn to face the room as the leaves fold up at night. It is safe around cats and dogs, and the daily movement is half of what you are buying. The colour stays best in humid air.

Stromanthe Stripestar has long lance-shaped leaves in deep glossy green, feathered along the midrib with a pale silver stripe that fades out toward the edges. The undersides are solid wine purple right across, and the stalks are the same red. The contrast is between the two faces of the leaf rather than in the top surface, so the plant changes colour depending on how the leaves are sitting.

Growth & size

Leaves come up on upright red-tinged stalks from a clump at the base, unrolling one at a time. Like the rest of the prayer plant family they fold up in the evening and open again in the morning, turning the purple undersides to the room overnight. Indoors it gets to around 30 to 40cm tall and spreads a bit wider as the clump fills out. It grows most over the New Zealand growing season from October to April.

Steady humidity and soft water

It keeps its striping and colour best in humid air and on rainwater or filtered water rather than hard tap water.

Non-toxic to cats and dogs. Comes in a 14cm plastic nursery pot.
