Size
You buy this one for the leaf surface, soft velvet in deep green with pale veins running through it. Up close it looks more like fabric than a leaf. It has a reputation as a difficult collector's plant, but give it a humid corner and something to climb and it is more straightforward than that reputation suggests.

Philodendron verrucosum has heart-shaped leaves in deep green with a soft velvet texture, and pale veining that stands out clearly against the dark surface. The leaf stalks are covered in coarse bristly hairs that give them a warty look, which is where the species name comes from. Older leaves get to around 30 to 50cm long.

Growth & size

It is a climber, putting out aerial roots that grip a pole or support as it goes up. New leaves come out rolled and open over several days, each one bigger than the last as the plant gets higher. Indoors it gets to around 60cm to 1.2m on a pole. It grows over the New Zealand growing season from October to April and slows over winter. This one comes already established on a coir pole.

Toxic to cats, dogs and people if eaten. Contains calcium oxalate crystals. Comes in a 17cm plastic nursery pot.
