Almost everything that goes wrong with a moth orchid comes from one misunderstanding: it is not a pot plant. It is a plant that grows on the side of a tree, and its roots expect air.

In short

Look at the roots, not the calendar. Silvery grey means water it. Bright green means leave it alone. Soak it at the sink, let every drop drain, and never let it stand in water. That is most of the job.

The two mistakes

Watering on a schedule, especially with ice cubes or a splash in the pot. An orchid's roots sit in bark, not soil, and they need to dry between waterings. Small regular top-ups keep the bark permanently damp and the roots suffocate. The plant then cannot take up water at all, the leaves go limp, and the natural reaction is to water it more. That is the loop that kills most of them.

Assuming limp leaves mean thirst. On a Phalaenopsis, floppy wrinkled leaves are far more often a root problem than a water problem. Rotted roots cannot drink, so the plant dehydrates while sitting in wet bark. Before you water a limp orchid, look at its roots.

What normal looks like

  • Thick pale roots wandering out of the pot and into the air. This is what the plant does in the wild and it is a sign of health, not a problem to be tucked back in.
  • Roots that shift from silvery grey to bright green within minutes of being watered.
  • Flowers opening in sequence from the bottom of the spike upward, over several weeks.
  • A whole flowering lasting two to three months, sometimes longer in a cool room.
  • The lowest, oldest leaf yellowing and dropping once or twice a year while new leaves form from the centre.
  • Nothing visible happening for months after flowering. The plant is resting, not failing.

Where it comes from

In short

Warm, humid forests from Southeast Asia through to northern Australia, growing on tree trunks and branches rather than in the ground. Rain runs over the roots and drains away in minutes. Everything about how you water follows from that.

Phalaenopsis are epiphytes. They live attached to the bark of trees, mostly in the humid lowland forests of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and surrounding regions, with the genus reaching as far as northern Australia. They are not parasites. The tree is furniture, not food.

In that position a plant gets drenched during rain and then dries in moving air within an hour or two. It gets bright light filtered through canopy above, never direct overhead sun. It gets humidity in the air constantly, and it never, at any point, sits in standing water.

A plastic pot of bark on a windowsill is an attempt to imitate that. The bark exists to hold the plant upright while letting water run straight through, which is why replacing it with potting soil kills the plant. Soil holds water against roots that evolved to be rained on and then left alone.

Go deeper: why your orchid came in a clear plastic pot

Two reasons, and both are practical rather than decorative. The first is that you can see the roots without disturbing the plant, which matters enormously given that root colour is the watering signal and root condition is the main diagnostic.

The second is light. Phalaenopsis roots contain chlorophyll and photosynthesise, which is unusual, and a clear pot lets them do it. The effect is modest and the plant will not suffer in an opaque pot, but there is no reason to give it up. Keep the clear grow pot and sit it inside a decorative cover pot, lifting it out to water.

Naming and history

In short

Named in 1825 by a Dutch-German botanist who thought the flowers looked like moths hovering in the forest. It went from a wealthy collector's obsession to the second most sold potted plant in the world on the back of one laboratory technique.

The moth resemblance

The genus was formally described in 1825 by Carl Ludwig Blume, in his Bijdragen tot de flora van Nederlandsch Indië, a flora of the Dutch East Indies. The name is built from the Ancient Greek phalaina, meaning a kind of moth, and the suffix -opsis, meaning having the appearance of.

The story attached to it is that Blume, seeing the pale flowers at a distance in the forest, took them for moths resting on the trees. Whether or not that specific moment happened, the resemblance is real enough that the common name in English is simply moth orchid.

A fact worth keepingAround seventy species sit in the genus. Nearly every orchid sold in a supermarket is a complex hybrid of several of them, which is why they are tougher than their wild parents.

From glasshouse rarity to everywhere

For most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries orchids were expensive because they were nearly impossible to reproduce reliably. Orchid seed is microscopic and carries almost no food reserve, and in the wild it germinates only in partnership with a specific fungus. Growers could collect plants and they could cross them, but they could not turn out consistent quantities.

What changed that was tissue culture, specifically the ability to multiply orchids from meristem tissue in sterile flasks. Suddenly a single desirable plant could become tens of thousands of genetically identical ones. Combined with Dutch and Taiwanese greenhouse production at scale, that turned the moth orchid from a collector's item into a plant you can buy alongside the groceries.

The hybrids that resulted are worth appreciating on their own terms. They flower more freely than wild species, hold blooms longer, tolerate ordinary indoor conditions, and come in colours no wild Phalaenopsis produces. Our six differ from each other in flower colour and pattern only, and share a single set of care needs.

How the plant works

In short

The roots are wrapped in a spongy layer that soaks up water like blotting paper and turns green when it does. The plant grows from a single point and never branches. And it breathes at night rather than during the day, like a cactus.

The velamen, and why roots change colour

Orchid roots are covered in a layer of specialised dead cells called the velamen radicum. It is spongy, several cells thick, and it works like blotting paper: it grabs water fast when water is available, holds it against the living root beneath, and then slows evaporation when things dry out. It also protects the root from sun and physical damage.

The practical consequence is the single most useful thing to know about this plant. Dry velamen is full of air and looks silvery grey. Wet velamen is transparent and lets you see the green root beneath. So the roots are a moisture gauge you can read from across the room.

Why this matters at homeYou never have to guess when to water a Phalaenopsis. Silver, water it. Green, do not.

One growing point, forever

Phalaenopsis are monopodial, meaning they grow from a single tip and do not branch. New leaves form from the centre, one at a time, and the plant slowly gains height as the oldest lower leaves are shed. Unlike many orchids it has no pseudobulbs, the swollen storage organs you see on Cattleyas and Dendrobiums, so it has less stored water to fall back on and prefers not to dry out completely for long.

This also explains why you cannot divide one. There is only ever one growing point. A clump of orchids in a single pot is several separate plants that were potted together.

Breathing at night

Most plants open their leaf pores during the day to take in carbon dioxide, losing water while they do it. Phalaenopsis instead runs crassulacean acid metabolism, or CAM: it opens its pores at night when the air is cooler and damper, fixes carbon then, and keeps them shut through the heat of the day.

It is the same water-saving strategy cacti use, which sounds odd for a rainforest plant until you remember it lives on a branch with no soil. Perched up a tree, it faces drought conditions between rains regardless of how humid the forest is.

Go deeper: what CAM means for when you water and feed

Because the plant does its gas exchange overnight, its metabolism is most active in the dark hours. This is part of why the difference between day and night temperature matters so much for triggering a flower spike, and why a room that stays a constant temperature around the clock often produces a healthy plant that never reflowers.

It is also a reason to water in the morning rather than the evening. Watering early lets surface moisture, particularly any water that has found its way into the crown, evaporate during the day. Water sitting in the crown overnight, when the plant is cool and the air is still, is how crown rot starts.

Flowers built to wait

Phalaenopsis flowers last extraordinarily long, commonly two to three months, because in the wild they are waiting for a specific pollinator that may not arrive quickly. An unpollinated flower has every reason to persist. Buds open in sequence from the base of the spike upward, so a single spike delivers flowers over many weeks rather than all at once.

Growing it

In short

Bright indirect light, water when the roots go silver, soak and drain completely, bark rather than soil, feed weakly through the growing season, repot every year or two when the bark breaks down.

Light

Bright indirect light, all year. An east-facing window with gentle morning sun is close to perfect. A north-facing window in New Zealand gives the strongest light through the day and works well with a sheer curtain or a metre of distance. What it will not take is hours of direct summer sun on the leaves, which scorches them.

Read the leaf colour

Healthy Phalaenopsis leaves are a mid grass green. Dark, deep green leaves mean too little light, and a plant with dark leaves will grow happily for years without ever producing a flower spike. Yellowish or reddish leaves mean too much. Aim for the middle.

Water

Forget frequency. Look at the roots through the clear pot, and water when most of them have gone silvery grey.

  1. Lift the grow pot out of its decorative cover pot and take it to the sink.
  2. Run tepid water through the bark for 30 seconds or so, letting it pour out of the bottom. Alternatively stand the pot in a bowl of water for 10 to 15 minutes so the bark and velamen soak fully.
  3. Let it drain completely. Give it several minutes. Tip the pot gently to clear any water pooled in the crown or between the leaves.
  4. Return it to the cover pot and do not water again until the roots are silver.

In an Auckland home that usually works out around weekly through summer and every ten to fourteen days in winter, but treat those numbers as an expectation rather than an instruction. The roots are the instruction.

Two things not to do

Do not use ice cubes. It is a widely repeated tip and it is wrong for a plant from a tropical forest, delivering cold shock and never enough water to soak the velamen. And do not leave the pot standing in water in the cover pot, which is the fastest route to root rot.

Water quality

New Zealand tap water is fine for Phalaenopsis in most of the country, and Auckland's supply is soft. If you are on very hard water you may see white mineral crust on the bark over time, in which case rainwater or filtered water is a small improvement. Let cold tap water come to room temperature first.

Temperature

Comfortable between 18 and 26 degrees through the day, which covers most New Zealand homes. It tolerates a bit either side, but sustained cold below about 15 degrees stresses it and can cause buds to drop.

The important part is covered separately under getting it to flower again, because a drop in night temperature is what triggers a new spike.

Humidity

Between 50 and 70 percent suits it. Ordinary New Zealand indoor humidity is usually workable, though a dry winter room with a heat pump running can drop well below that.

Grouping plants, a bathroom with good light, or a humidifier all help. A pebble tray with the pot sitting above the water line, not in it, is the traditional approach and does a little. Misting the leaves achieves very little and risks water settling in the crown, so it is not worth the trade.

Potting mix

Bark, not soil. This is not a preference, it is a requirement. A standard Phalaenopsis mix is medium-grade orchid bark, sometimes with added perlite, charcoal or a little sphagnum moss.

The purpose of the mix is to hold the plant steady and let water pass through while leaving air around the roots. Ordinary potting mix does the opposite and will suffocate the roots within a season.

Feeding

Weakly, weekly, is the traditional orchid advice and it holds up. Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at quarter to half the recommended strength, roughly every second watering through the growing season from October to April, easing off over winter.

Always feed onto already damp bark rather than dry, so nothing burns the roots, and flush the pot with plain water every month or so to clear accumulated salts.

Repotting

Every one to two years, and the trigger is the bark rather than the plant. Bark decomposes, and as it breaks down it holds more water and less air, which is exactly the condition that rots roots. Old mix looks dark, crumbly and soil-like instead of chunky.

  1. Repot after flowering has finished, not during.
  2. Slide the plant out and gently remove all the old bark from between the roots.
  3. Trim off any roots that are brown, hollow, flat or mushy with sterilised scissors. Keep everything firm and pale.
  4. Settle it into fresh bark in a pot only slightly larger, working the bark between the roots. Some aerial roots will not fit in the pot. Leave them out, they are fine.
  5. Wait a few days before watering so cut surfaces can seal.

Getting it to flower again

In short

Cooler nights are the trigger. A run of three to four weeks with night temperatures around 15 to 18 degrees, while days stay warmer, tells the plant to build a new spike. In New Zealand autumn does this for you if the plant is somewhere it can feel it.

This is the thing people most often think they have failed at. A Phalaenopsis that has not reflowered is usually not sick, it is just living somewhere with no seasons. A room held at a constant comfortable temperature day and night, all year, provides no signal to start a spike.

What to do when the flowers finish

Once the last flower has dropped, you have two options and they suit different situations.

  • Cut above a node. Find the small triangular bumps along the green spike. Cut about a centimetre above one of the lower ones, usually the second or third from the bottom. The plant may branch from that node and reflower within a couple of months. Faster, but the resulting flowers are usually fewer and smaller.
  • Cut at the base. Remove the whole spike near where it emerges. Slower, and it directs the plant's energy into leaves and roots instead. The next spike will typically be stronger and carry more flowers.

If the spike has gone brown and dry, that decision is made for you. Cut it off at the base.

Triggering the next spike

  1. Give it a period of cooler nights, around 15 to 18 degrees, with days staying warmer. Three to four weeks is usually enough.
  2. In New Zealand, autumn does this naturally. A spot near a window from about March onward often provides the temperature swing without any intervention.
  3. Keep the light bright through the trigger period. Cool and dark will not work.
  4. Keep feeding lightly. A plant short on resources will not commit to a spike.
  5. Then wait. A new spike typically appears eight to twelve weeks after the trigger period.
Is it a spike or a root?

New spikes and new roots both emerge as small green nubs and are easy to confuse. A root is rounded at the tip, smooth, and grows downward or outward. A spike is flatter with a slightly pointed tip like a mitten, often a darker green, and grows upward toward the light. Wait a week or two and it becomes obvious.

Propagation and keikis

In short

You cannot divide a Phalaenopsis or grow one from a cutting. The only route at home is a keiki, a baby plant that occasionally forms on a flower spike, and you cannot force one reliably.

Because the plant is monopodial, with one growing point and no branching stem, none of the usual houseplant propagation methods apply. There is nothing to cut and nothing to divide. Commercially they are produced by tissue culture in sterile laboratory conditions, which is not a home process.

Keikis

Occasionally a plant produces a keiki, from the Hawaiian for baby: a complete miniature plant, with its own leaves and roots, growing from a node on an old flower spike. It is a clone of the parent.

Keikis often appear when a plant has been under some stress, or simply as a quirk of a particular plant. They cannot be reliably induced without hormone paste, and even then results are mixed.

  1. Leave the keiki attached until it has two or three roots of its own, each at least 5cm long. This usually takes several months. Removing it early is the common mistake.
  2. Cut the spike about 2cm either side of the keiki with sterilised scissors.
  3. Pot it into fine grade bark in a very small pot, and keep humidity higher than usual while it settles.
  4. Treat it as a normal plant from there. Expect its first flowers in two to three years.
Worth knowingA keiki left attached to the parent will keep growing and can flower while still connected. There is no obligation to remove it at all.

Diagnose a problem

Tick everything you can actually see on your plant. The more you tick, the better this gets at separating causes that look alike.

Water and root problems

In short

Overwatering and underwatering both make the leaves go limp, which is why orchids get killed by kindness. The roots settle it. Brown and mushy means drowned. Silver and shrivelled means thirsty.

Root rot

The most common way a moth orchid is lost, and it is nearly always caused by good intentions. Contributing causes are watering little and often instead of soaking and draining, leaving the pot standing in water in a cover pot, bark that has broken down, or the plant being potted in soil.

How to identify it

  • Leaves limp and wrinkled while the bark is still damp. This combination is the giveaway.
  • Roots brown, soft, and collapsing to a thin wiry thread when gently squeezed.
  • Roots staying green for a week or more after watering, because the bark is not drying.
  • A sour smell from the pot.
  • Leaves yellowing from several places at once rather than just the bottom one.
Look before you water

A limp orchid looks thirsty. If the roots have rotted, watering it again is the worst thing you can do. Slide it out of the pot and look first. It takes a minute and it is the difference between saving it and finishing it.

How to treat it

  1. Remove the plant and clear all the old bark away from the roots.
  2. With sterilised scissors, cut off every root that is brown, hollow, flat or soft. Keep only firm pale roots. Do not be timid, dead roots do not recover.
  3. If any tissue at the base of the plant is soft, cut back to firm tissue there too.
  4. Let the plant sit in open air for an hour or two so the cuts seal.
  5. Repot into fresh medium grade bark in a pot sized to the roots that remain, which will often be smaller than the original.
  6. Wait several days before watering, then water normally and let the roots be your guide.

A plant with even a few healthy roots can recover. If every root is gone, keeping it in a humid environment with the base just above damp sphagnum sometimes triggers new roots, but it is a long shot and it takes months.

Crown rot

Less common and more urgent. Water sits in the crown, the tight centre where new leaves emerge, and the tissue there rots. Because that is the plant's single growing point, losing it means the plant cannot produce new leaves.

Tip water out of the crown after every watering, and water in the morning so anything left evaporates during the day. If it has already started, cut away the blackened tissue with a sterilised blade, keep the crown dry, and improve the air movement around the plant. Be honest with yourself about the odds: a plant that loses its growing point entirely will not continue, though it may still produce a keiki from a spike node.

Underwatering

Much less dangerous. Roots go silvery, flat and papery, leaves wrinkle and go leathery. Soak the pot in a bowl of tepid water for 15 minutes, drain fully, and resume normal watering. Leaves firm up over a week or so. Badly shrivelled older leaves may not fully recover, but new growth will be normal.

Light problems

In short

Too little light does not damage the plant, it just stops it flowering and turns the leaves dark green. Too much light bleaches and scorches. Leaf colour is the gauge: aim for mid grass green.

Insufficient light

The most common reason a perfectly healthy orchid never flowers again. It causes no visible damage, which is why it goes unnoticed for years.

How to identify it

  • Leaves a deep, dark, glossy green rather than mid green.
  • No flower spike across a full year despite healthy leaves and roots.
  • New leaves that are large and floppy rather than firm.

How to treat it

Move it to an east-facing window, or a north-facing window with a sheer curtain. Change is gradual. Leaves already formed stay dark, but new growth comes through the right colour, and the flowering response follows in the next season.

Sun scorch

Direct sun through unshaded glass, most likely between November and February. Damage appears as bleached pale patches or dry brown areas on the upper leaf surfaces facing the window, over days rather than months.

Move it back from the glass or add a sheer curtain. Scorched tissue does not repair, and badly marked leaves can be left in place since the plant still uses the undamaged parts. When moving a plant somewhere brighter, do it in stages over a couple of weeks.

Pests

In short

Phalaenopsis are not especially pest prone. Mealybugs and scale are the two you are most likely to meet, both usually arriving on a new plant. Check the tight spaces between the leaves, which is where they hide.

Treating mealybugs and scale

Both are protected by a waxy or armoured coating, which is why generic sprays underperform.

  1. Isolate the plant away from your others.
  2. Remove every visible insect individually with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Tedious, and it is the part that works.
  3. Follow with a horticultural oil across the whole plant. Grosafe Enspray 99 or Yates Conqueror Oil both suit and are available at Mitre 10, Bunnings and garden centres. They smother rather than poison, so coverage must be complete.
  4. Check the crown and the gaps between leaf bases, and slide the plant from its cover pot to check the outside of the grow pot.
  5. Repeat every seven to ten days for three to four rounds.

Treating spider mites

Isolate the plant, rinse it thoroughly with attention to the leaf undersides, then treat with Yates Mavrik or Grosafe Enspray 99 every five to seven days for at least three rounds. Mites thrive in dry still air, so raising humidity afterwards makes a repeat less likely.

Treating fungus gnats

Gnats in an orchid pot are a message about watering. They breed in bark that stays wet, which is the same condition that rots roots. Let the bark dry properly between waterings, use yellow sticky traps to monitor numbers, and if the bark is broken down and staying soggy, repot into fresh.

Safety and pets

In short

Non-toxic to cats, dogs and people. Phalaenopsis are one of the genuinely pet-safe flowering houseplants, which is a large part of why we stock them.

Phalaenopsis orchids are not toxic to cats or dogs and are not toxic to humans. A pet that chews a leaf or a flower may get an upset stomach simply from eating something it does not normally eat, in the same way it might after eating grass, but there is no poisoning risk and no calcium oxalate of the kind found in philodendrons, peace lilies and most aroids.

Two practical notes rather than safety warnings. Bark mix is worth keeping out of reach of a dog inclined to eat things, since a mouthful of bark is unpleasant and can cause a blockage in a small animal. And any fertiliser you use should be stored and applied out of reach, since the plant being safe does not make the plant food safe.

If you are choosing plants for a home with animals that chew, this is one of the few genuinely showy options that carries no risk. Our ferns and prayer plants are the others.

Questions

Should I really not use ice cubes?

Correct, do not. The advice is popular because it is easy to standardise, not because it suits the plant. A tropical epiphyte gets warm rain, not ice, and three cubes never delivers enough water to soak the velamen and the bark properly. Take the pot to the sink and water it properly instead. It takes a minute and the plant will be visibly better for it.

My orchid's leaves are limp. Should I water it?

Look at the roots first. If they are brown and soft and the bark is still damp, the roots have rotted and more water will finish the job. If the roots are silvery and papery and the bark is bone dry, then yes, soak it. Limp leaves on their own do not tell you which situation you are in, which is why this plant is so often killed by a well-meant watering.

Why won't it flower again?

Almost always one of two things. Either the light is too low, which you can check by leaf colour, since dark green leaves mean an under-lit plant. Or it has never had a run of cooler nights to trigger a spike. Give it three to four weeks with nights around 15 to 18 degrees and warmer days, keep the light bright, and expect a spike eight to twelve weeks later. In New Zealand, autumn near a window usually does it for free.

Can I cut off the aerial roots? They look untidy.

Please do not. They are functioning roots doing exactly what they do on a tree in the wild, taking up moisture from the air and anchoring the plant. Cutting them removes working tissue and opens wounds. If they bother you visually, a larger cover pot hides them, or you can gently tuck the newest and most flexible ones toward the pot when you repot.

Do I cut the flower spike off after flowering?

Your choice, and it depends what you want. Cutting above the second or third node from the bottom often gets a branch and more flowers within a couple of months, but they tend to be fewer and smaller. Cutting at the base sends energy into leaves and roots instead, and the next spike is usually stronger. If the spike has gone brown and dry, cut it at the base.

There's a baby plant growing on the flower spike. What is it?

That is a keiki, a clone of the parent plant. Leave it attached until it has two or three roots of its own at least 5cm long, which usually takes several months, then cut the spike a couple of centimetres either side of it and pot it into fine bark. Removing it too early is the common mistake. You can also just leave it attached indefinitely, and it will keep growing and can even flower there.

Can I repot it into normal potting mix?

No, and this is the one substitution that reliably kills them. The roots need air around them and potting mix holds water against them until they suffocate and rot. Use medium grade orchid bark. If a plant has arrived in soil, repot it into bark now rather than waiting.

Are the different colours cared for differently?
