The leaf surface is the reason to buy this one. Thick and quilted, deep green with bold silver veins over the top, and a deep burgundy underside you see whenever the light is behind it. Keep it warm and humid and it will keep pushing out leaves, each one better than the last.

Alocasia watsoniana has thick, heavily textured leaves standing upright on sturdy stems. Each one is deep green with bold silvery white veins over the top and a burgundy purple underside. The surface is quilted and almost leathery. Older leaves get to around 40 to 60cm long.

Growth & size

It grows from a central base, sending up new leaves one at a time on long upright stems. Each one comes out rolled and opens over several days. Indoors it gets to around 1 to 1.5m tall and spreads to about a metre. It grows over the New Zealand growing season from October to April and slows down over winter.

Winter behaviour

Growth slows or stops over winter and it may drop an older leaf. That is normal, and it picks up again in spring.

Toxic to cats, dogs and people if eaten. Contains calcium oxalate crystals. Comes in a 17cm plastic nursery pot.
