Anthurium

Bugatti

Size
A compact red anthurium that keeps flowering indoors, with each bloom lasting six to eight weeks before the next one opens. The red is a clear scarlet with a high gloss, so it picks up light from across a room. Small enough for a shelf or a desk without giving up the flowers.

Anthurium Bugatti has glossy heart-shaped spathes in bright scarlet red, each one 8 to 10cm across with a slightly puckered surface and a raised middle vein. A pale pink spadix stands upright at the front of each one. The leaves are deep green, heart-shaped and semi-glossy, on slim upright stalks that go red at the base.

Growth & size

New leaves and flower stems both come up from a central base on long stalks, with a flower turning up between every few leaves. Blooms open one at a time and keep their colour for six to eight weeks before fading to green. Indoors it gets to around 40 to 50cm tall and about the same across. It flowers through most of the year in a warm room, with the heaviest run over the New Zealand growing season from October to April.

Fading flowers

Older spathes go green and then dull before they drop. Cut those stems back to the base and the plant will put its energy into new ones.

Toxic to cats, dogs and people if eaten. Contains calcium oxalate crystals. Comes in a 14cm plastic nursery pot.
