Calathea

Gekko

Size
A patterned Calathea with deep green leaves and a wide band of pale chartreuse through the middle, different on every leaf. It is safe around cats and dogs, and it lifts and lowers its leaves through the day, so it is never quite the same shape twice. Steady warmth and humidity keep the pattern sharp.

Calathea Gekko has broad oval leaves in deep green, each with a wide band of pale chartreuse running out from the midrib and breaking into uneven patches toward the edge. No two leaves are patterned the same. The leaf stalks are flushed red purple and stand the leaves upright, lifting them in the evening and lowering them again in the morning.

Growth & size

Leaves come up on their own stalks from a clump at the base, unrolling one at a time. Like the rest of the prayer plant family they lift in the evening and lower again in the morning, so you can actually see the plant move. Indoors it gets to around 30 to 40cm tall. It grows most over the New Zealand growing season from October to April.

Soft water suits it best

Calatheas can go brown at the edges on hard tap water. Rainwater or filtered water keeps the leaves clean, which matters more through a dry New Zealand winter.

Non-toxic to cats and dogs. Comes in a 14cm plastic nursery pot.
