The pink one everyone wants. Dark, nearly black leaves with blocks of bubblegum pink through them, and no two plants the same. Give it a bright spot and a stake to climb and it keeps putting out variegated leaves. A sought-after philodendron in a starter size.

Pink Princess has arrow-shaped leaves in very dark green, close to black, splashed and blocked with bubblegum pink. The stems are deep wine red, and it climbs slowly up a support.

Growth & size

It climbs, putting out one leaf at a time from a growing tip, and the leaves get bigger once it takes hold on a moss pole or stake. In a 12cm pot it's around 25 to 30cm now, and it will go a lot taller given time. Most of the growth, and the strongest pink, comes over the New Zealand growing season from October to April.

Bright light keeps the pink

The pink comes through strongest in bright indirect light, and in New Zealand a north-facing window is ideal. In a dimmer spot the new leaves tend to come through greener.

Toxic to cats, dogs and people if eaten. Contains calcium oxalate crystals. Comes in a 12cm plastic nursery pot.
