If you read nothing else on this page, read this. A White Knight is not a difficult plant to keep alive. It is a difficult plant to keep white, and those are two separate problems with two separate answers.
Give it the brightest indirect light you have, short of direct sun on the leaves. Water when the top few centimetres are dry, and never leave it sitting wet. Give it something to climb. Do all three and the white keeps coming.
The two mistakes
Treating it like an ordinary philodendron on light. A plain green Philodendron is genuinely happy in a moderately lit room. A White Knight is not, and it will tell you slowly. The plant does not die, it just quietly stops producing white. Six months later you have a green philodendron that cost you a lot more than a green philodendron.
Watering it on a schedule. The white sections of a White Knight contain no chlorophyll, which means a heavily variegated plant is running on less photosynthetic tissue than its size suggests. It uses water more slowly than a fully green plant of the same size, and a routine that suits your Monstera will keep this one wet. Wet roots on a slow plant is how they are usually lost.
What normal looks like
- Every leaf is marked differently. Flecks and streaks on one, a clean block over half the next. There is no pattern and nothing has gone wrong.
- An occasional leaf comes through almost entirely white. It looks spectacular and it is a small drain on the plant, not a prize.
- An occasional leaf comes through almost entirely green. Also normal, also not a failure, as long as it is not every leaf.
- Leaf stalks and newer stems are flushed pinky red. That is the parent species showing through, not stress.
- One new leaf at a time from the growing tip, each larger than the last once the plant has something to climb.
- Growth largely stops between May and September. Nothing is wrong.
Where it comes from
The parent species, Philodendron erubescens, is a climbing rainforest plant from Colombia. It starts life on the forest floor, finds a tree, and climbs into filtered light. Almost everything about how you should treat a White Knight follows from that one habit.
Philodendron erubescens is native to Colombia, where it grows in humid tropical forest as a climber. It is a hemiepiphyte, which is worth unpacking because it explains the plant's whole behaviour: it germinates on the ground, grows towards the nearest dark vertical shape, attaches itself with aerial roots, and then climbs, keeping a connection to the soil while its upper growth lives against bark in dappled light.
This matters more than it sounds. A plant with that habit produces small leaves near the ground and progressively larger ones as it climbs. It is not a bush that happens to fall over. The size and quality of the leaves are a direct response to having something to climb, and a White Knight left to sprawl across a shelf will stay small and produce modest leaves indefinitely.
The practical translation for a New Zealand home is that this plant wants three things it had in Colombia: bright light filtered through something rather than direct overhead sun, air that is not bone dry, and a vertical surface to grip. The first and third are the ones people skip.
Go deeper: why aerial roots are not a problem to be tidied away
New growers often cut the stubby aerial roots that emerge along the stem, assuming they are untidy or a sign the plant is unhappy. They are neither. They are how the plant anchors itself and, once in contact with a damp moss pole, how it takes up additional water and nutrients directly into the upper stem.
A White Knight whose aerial roots are attached to a moist pole behaves like a different plant to one whose roots are waving in dry air. Larger leaves, faster growth, better variegation stability. Leave them, and give them something to reach.
Naming, history and lookalikes
The species name means blushing, for the red stems. The White Knight's own origin is genuinely undocumented, which is unusual and worth saying plainly. It is also routinely confused with two other white philodendrons, and the stems are how you tell them apart.
The blushing philodendron
Erubescens comes from the Latin erubescere, to redden or to blush, and refers to the wine-red flush on the stems, leaf stalks and the undersides of new growth. It is a good name. On a White Knight the pinky red stalks sitting under dark green and white leaves are a large part of why the plant looks the way it does, and they are the first thing that distinguishes it from its lookalikes.
An origin nobody can actually cite
Here is an honest gap. Where the White Knight came from is not documented in any source we would be willing to stand behind. Accounts variously describe it as a naturally occurring mutation, a deliberate hybrid, a selection maintained in cultivation, or something that emerged from tissue culture. No date, no breeder and no location is reliably attached to any of these.
We would rather say that than repeat a confident-sounding story. What is not in doubt is that it is a variegated form of Philodendron erubescens, that the variegation is chimeral rather than stable, and that it reached the wider houseplant market during the rare-plant boom of the late 2010s, arriving in New Zealand as part of that same wave.
White Knight, White Princess, White Wizard
These three are constantly mixed up, including by sellers. They are different plants with different growth habits and different prices, and the stems tell you which is which faster than the leaves do.

If you are buying a White Knight and the stems are plain green, you are looking at a White Wizard. If they are green with pink flecks, it is a White Princess. Neither is a worse plant, but they are not interchangeable and they are not priced the same.
How the variegation works
The white is chimeral, meaning the plant is made of two genetically different tissues growing side by side. The white tissue has no chlorophyll and cannot feed itself. This single fact explains the slow growth, the unpredictable leaves, why it can revert to green, and why you cannot grow one from seed.
Two plants in one stem
A chimera, in botanical terms, is a plant whose growing tip contains two genetically distinct cell lines layered together. One line produces chlorophyll normally. The other carries a mutation that prevents it. As the growing tip divides and pushes out a new leaf, whichever cell line happens to end up where determines which parts of that leaf are green and which are white.
That is the whole mechanism, and it is why nobody, including the grower, can tell you what the next leaf will look like. There is no pattern being followed. Each leaf is a fresh roll of the dice at the growing tip.
White tissue is a passenger
Chlorophyll is what converts light into sugar. White tissue has none, so it contributes nothing and still costs the plant water and structural resources to build and maintain. A White Knight is carrying dead weight by design.
Three consequences follow, and all three are things people misread as problems:
- It grows slowly. Compared to a plain Philodendron erubescens of the same size, there is simply less working leaf.
- It needs more light, not less. The green sections have to do the work of a whole plant, so they need better conditions than a fully green plant would.
- A fully white leaf is a liability. It looks incredible and it will never pay for itself. The plant supports it from elsewhere until it eventually browns off.
If a plant produces several consecutive all-white leaves, it is heading for trouble rather than getting better. A stem that runs out of green tissue entirely cannot sustain itself and will stall and die back. The fix is to cut back to a node below the last well-balanced leaf, which forces growth from a bud carrying both cell lines.
Reversion, and why it happens
The opposite failure is reversion: the plant starts producing solid green leaves. Because green tissue photosynthesises and therefore grows faster, a reverting stem will progressively out-compete the variegated growth until the whole plant is green. It does not come back on its own.
Low light drives this. Under insufficient light the plant is under pressure to maximise its photosynthetic capacity, and green growth is favoured. Catching it early and cutting back to a variegated node is the only reliable response.
Go deeper: why seed does not work, and what that means for price
Chimeral variegation lives in the arrangement of cell layers at the growing tip, not in a gene you can pass on in the ordinary way. Seed produced by a chimeral plant comes from a single cell line and grows up plain green. This is why you cannot buy White Knight seed, and why anything sold as such is not what it claims to be.
Every genuine White Knight in existence is therefore a physical piece of another White Knight, propagated vegetatively, with an unbroken chain of cuttings back to the original mutation. That constraint, rather than any difficulty in growing it, is what kept prices high for years. Prices have fallen substantially as the propagated population grew, which is exactly what you would predict.
Growing it
Brightest indirect light you have. Water when the top few centimetres are dry and drain it fully. Chunky free-draining mix, a moss pole, moderate to high humidity, light feeding October to April.
Light
This is the section that decides what your plant looks like in a year.
Give it bright indirect light for as much of the day as you can manage. In New Zealand a north-facing window is the strongest light through the day and is the right target, with the plant either slightly back from the glass or behind a sheer curtain. An east-facing window giving direct morning sun and bright light after that also works well.
What it will not take is hours of direct summer sun on the leaves. New Zealand's UV levels are high, and white leaf tissue has no pigment to protect it. The green sections will cope where the white sections scorch, so sun damage on this plant shows up on the white first, as brown papery patches that never recover.
Too little: new leaves coming through with progressively less white, then solid green. Long gaps between leaves on the stem, and the plant leaning hard toward the window. Too much: dry brown scorch on the white sections specifically, on the side facing the glass, appearing over days rather than months.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of mix have dried out. Check with a finger rather than a schedule, because the right interval changes with the season, the pot and the room.
- Check first. Push a finger in to the second knuckle. Damp means wait.
- Water thoroughly. Take it to the sink and water until it runs freely from the drainage holes. This flushes the mix and wets it evenly.
- Drain completely. Give it a few minutes, then tip out anything sitting in the cover pot or saucer.
- Wait, then check again. In an Auckland summer expect roughly weekly. Over winter it can stretch to a fortnight or more.
Heavily variegated plants use water more slowly than green ones. If you own several philodendrons, this one should be watered less often than the rest, not on the same round.
Water quality
New Zealand tap water is fine. This is not a Calathea and it is not sensitive to the minerals in ordinary household supply. If your water is heavily chlorinated, standing it in an open jug overnight is more than enough.
Support and climbing
A moss pole or a coir pole is the single change that most improves this plant, and it is the one most often skipped.
As the aerial roots grip a damp pole, the plant switches into climbing mode and starts producing progressively larger leaves. Without a pole it will keep making leaves the same modest size indefinitely, no matter how well you feed it. Attach the stem loosely to the pole with soft ties until the aerial roots take hold themselves, and keep the pole damp by watering down it.
Temperature
Comfortable between 18 and 26 degrees. It stops growing below about 15 and is unhappy below 12, which matters in a New Zealand winter where indoor temperatures often drop further overnight than people expect. Keep it away from single-glazed glass on cold nights, away from draughty doorways, and out of the direct blast of a heat pump.
Humidity
Moderate to high, ideally above 60 percent. It will live at ordinary indoor humidity, but leaf edges brown more readily and new leaves can struggle to unfurl cleanly in dry air.
Grouping it with other plants, keeping it in a bathroom with good light, or running a humidifier through the dry part of a New Zealand winter all help. Misting does not. It evaporates within minutes and achieves nothing beyond leaving water sitting in the crown.
Potting mix
Chunky and free draining. Standard bagged potting mix on its own holds too much water around the roots of an aroid.
A reliable blend is roughly equal parts quality indoor potting mix, orchid bark, and pumice or perlite, with a handful of coarse coir or charcoal if you have it. Pumice is easy to source in New Zealand and adds useful weight for a plant that becomes top-heavy on a pole. The goal is a mix that holds some moisture but has visible air spaces through it.
Feeding
Light and regular through the growing season. A balanced liquid indoor fertiliser at half strength every three to four weeks from October to April, applied to already damp mix. Stop from May.
No fertiliser increases white. Variegation is genetic and light-driven. Feeding a plant that is producing green leaves will simply grow more green leaves, faster.
Repotting
Every two years or so, or when roots are circling the bottom of the pot. Go up one size only, around 3 to 5 centimetres in diameter, and repot in spring or early summer. An oversized pot holds wet mix the plant cannot use, which is the usual route to root rot on a slow-growing plant.
Size and growth expectations
In a 14cm pot expect roughly 30 to 40cm tall, still low and upright rather than climbing. On a pole in good light it will pass a metre over several years, with individual leaves reaching 20 to 30cm. Expect one new leaf every few weeks through the growing season, and very little between May and September.
Propagation
Stem cuttings with at least one node, or air layering for a more cautious approach. The one rule that matters: the cutting must include variegated tissue, or you will grow a plain green plant.
Because the variegation is chimeral, it travels only in the physical tissue that carries it. A cutting taken from a fully green section of stem will grow into a fully green plant, permanently. Look at the node you are cutting from and the leaf attached to it, and choose one where the white is well represented but not total.
People pick the prettiest leaf. What matters is the node, the small bump on the stem where a bud sits, because that bud is what becomes the new plant. A gorgeous leaf attached to a node on a green section of stem will still give you a green plant.
Method 1: Stem cuttings
- Choose a section of stem with at least one node and one healthy, well-variegated leaf. Two nodes is better than one.
- Cut cleanly with sterilised secateurs about a centimetre below the node. Wipe the blade with isopropyl alcohol first.
- Let the cut end callus in the shade for an hour or two.
- Root it in water, damp sphagnum moss or perlite. Sphagnum is the most reliable of the three for aroids, since it holds moisture and air together.
- Keep it warm, humid and in bright indirect light. A clear bag or propagation box makes a real difference.
- Expect roots in three to six weeks. Pot into normal chunky mix once roots are several centimetres long.
Method 2: Air layering
Slower, and much safer, because you do not remove anything from the parent until the new roots already exist. Worth using on an expensive or slow-growing plant.
- Find a node on the main stem, ideally one with an aerial root already emerging.
- Wrap that node in a handful of damp sphagnum moss.
- Wrap the moss in cling film or a purpose-made air layering pod, and secure it above and below. Leave it slightly open at the top so you can re-wet the moss.
- Keep the moss damp for four to eight weeks. Roots will become visible through the film.
- Cut below the new root mass and pot up. The new plant starts with a working root system already attached.
Diagnose a problem
Tick everything you can actually see on your plant. The more you tick, the better this gets at separating causes that look alike.
Water problems
Both overwatering and underwatering make the leaves droop, which is why they get confused. Feel the stem base and lift the pot. Soft stem and heavy wet pot means rot. Firm stem and light pot means thirst.
Root rot
The most common way a White Knight is lost. Because the plant grows slowly and uses water slowly, a watering routine that suits faster philodendrons will keep it too wet. Contributing causes are a dense mix, an oversized pot, a cover pot holding standing water, or watering to a calendar rather than a check.
How to identify it
- Several leaves yellowing or drooping at once rather than one old leaf at a time.
- Stem soft, dark or squashy near the soil line.
- Mix still visibly wet more than a week after watering.
- A sour or swampy smell from the surface.
- Roots brown, soft and stringy rather than firm and pale. This is the definitive test.
You cannot diagnose rot from above the soil, and drooping looks identical to thirst. Slide the plant out and look at the roots before you do anything, especially before you water it again.
How to treat it
- Remove the plant and wash the old mix off the roots so you can see every surface.
- With sterilised secateurs, cut away every soft brown root back to firm pale tissue. Wipe the blade between cuts.
- If the stem is soft at the base, cut above the damage into clean firm tissue. A healthy top section can be re-rooted even if the base is gone.
- Let the cuts dry in the shade for a few hours.
- Repot into fresh chunky mix in a pot sized to the remaining roots, which will often be smaller than the original.
- Do not water for several days, then water sparingly until new growth appears.
If the base is beyond saving, take a cutting from the healthiest well-variegated section of stem and root it in sphagnum. A White Knight is rarely a total loss while any firm variegated stem remains.
Underwatering
Less dangerous and usually reversible. Leaves go limp, the pot feels light, and the mix pulls away from the sides. If the mix has gone hydrophobic and water runs straight through, stand the pot in a basin for 20 minutes so it rehydrates from below, then drain fully. Leaves usually firm up within a day.
Light and variegation problems
Three separate problems live here. Too much sun burns the white. Too little light makes the plant revert to green. And a plant producing all-white leaves is running out of the green tissue it needs to survive. All three are managed with position and secateurs.
Sun scorch
Direct sun through unshaded glass, most likely between November and February, and most likely just after a plant has been moved somewhere brighter without a transition.
How to identify it
- Damage on white sections specifically, with green areas of the same leaf undamaged. This is the giveaway on a variegated plant.
- Dry brown or bleached patches with sharply defined edges, on the side facing the window.
- Onset over days after a move or a run of hot clear weather, not gradually over months.
How to treat it
Move it back from the glass or add a sheer curtain. Scorched tissue does not repair. Remove badly marked leaves once the plant has good growth elsewhere, and move plants into brighter positions over two weeks in stages rather than all at once.
Reversion to green
The slow one, and the one people notice too late.
How to identify it
- Each new leaf carrying less white than the one before.
- Eventually leaves emerging solid green.
- The plant otherwise looking healthy, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed.
How to treat it
Improve the light first, then cut. Trace back down the stem to the last leaf with a good balance of green and white, and cut just above the node below it. The plant will reshoot from a bud that carries both cell lines. Cutting without fixing the light will simply produce more green growth.
Running out of green
The opposite failure. A run of nearly all-white leaves is not the plant getting better, it is a stem losing the ability to feed itself. Growth slows, then stops, then the stem dies back.
How to treat it
The same cut, in the same place: back to a node below the last well-balanced leaf. Do it while the stem is still healthy rather than waiting to see whether it recovers, because it will not.
Pests
Thrips are the serious one on aroids and the reason to check new leaves as they unfurl. Spider mites turn up in warm dry rooms, and mealybugs arrive on new plants. Check the furled new leaf, because that is where thrips hide.

Treating thrips
Thrips deserve their reputation. They feed on the newest growth, so damage appears on the leaf you were most looking forward to, and they are persistent enough that a single treatment always fails.
- Isolate the plant immediately, away from every other plant in the house. Thrips move.
- Rinse the whole plant thoroughly in the shower, paying attention to the furled new leaf and every leaf joint.
- Treat with Yates Mavrik, adding Grosafe Enspray 99 as a wetting agent. Both are available at Mitre 10, Bunnings and garden centres.
- Repeat every five to seven days for at least four rounds. Eggs are laid inside leaf tissue and are not killed by contact sprays, so you are treating each new hatch.
- Keep checking weekly for a month after you think it is over.
Treating spider mites
Mites thrive in warm, dry, still air and reproduce fast. Isolate, rinse thoroughly, then treat with Yates Mavrik or Grosafe Enspray 99 every five to seven days for at least three rounds. Raising humidity around the plant afterwards makes a repeat far less likely.
Treating mealybugs
Isolate the plant, then remove every visible insect individually with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol. This is tedious and it is the part that works. Follow with horticultural oil across the whole plant every seven to ten days for three to four rounds, and check around the aerial roots and the base of the stem where they hide.
Treating fungus gnats
Gnats are a symptom of mix staying damp. Let the top few centimetres dry properly between waterings, cover the surface with a centimetre of pumice so adults cannot lay, and use yellow sticky traps to monitor numbers. Then look at why the mix was staying wet, because that is the same problem that causes rot.

Safety and pets
Toxic to cats, dogs and people if eaten. All parts contain sharp microscopic crystals that cause immediate mouth pain if chewed. Unpleasant rather than usually dangerous, and the pain itself tends to stop animals after one bite.
Like the rest of the arum family, Philodendron erubescens contains insoluble calcium oxalate as raphides: needle-shaped crystals held under pressure in the plant tissue. When an animal or child bites a leaf or stem, the crystals are released into the soft tissue of the mouth. The effect is mechanical rather than chemical, which is why it hurts immediately rather than hours later.
Symptoms in cats and dogs
- Pawing at the mouth or rubbing the face along the floor.
- Sudden heavy drooling.
- Head shaking and reluctance to eat.
- Vomiting or diarrhoea if a quantity has been swallowed.
What to do
Remove any remaining plant material from the mouth and offer water, milk or a small amount of food to help flush the crystals through. Symptoms usually settle within a few hours. Contact your vet if drooling persists beyond that, if there is swelling around the mouth or throat, or if breathing seems affected, which is rare but possible.
For people
The same applies, and the sap can irritate skin and eyes. Wash your hands after pruning, repotting or taking cuttings, and avoid touching your face while you work. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin. This matters more with this plant than most, because propagating it involves a lot of cutting.
The sensible position is the one you would take with a Monstera or a peace lily. Keep it out of reach of animals that chew plants and of small children, and enjoy it.
Questions
My new leaf came through completely green. Have I ruined it?
Not from one leaf. A single green leaf on an otherwise well-variegated plant is ordinary variation. What matters is the trend. Line up the last three or four leaves in order, and if each has less white than the one before, that is reversion and it needs brighter light and a cut back to a variegated node. One green leaf between two good ones is just the plant being a chimera.
Can I make my White Knight produce more white?
Only indirectly, and only up to a point. Better light encourages the plant to maintain the variegation it already carries, and cutting back to a well-variegated node forces new growth from tissue that carries both cell lines. Nothing you add, feed or spray will increase the white beyond what the plant's genetics allow.
An all-white leaf appeared. Should I cut it off?
Leave a single one. It looks good and the plant can carry it. If two or three appear in a row and growth is slowing, cut back to a node below the last leaf with a good green share, because that stem is running out of the chlorophyll it needs to sustain itself.
Why are my leaves staying small?
Almost always because it has nothing to climb. This is a hemiepiphyte and leaf size is a response to climbing, not to feeding or pot size. Add a moss or coir pole, tie the stem to it, keep the pole damp, and leaf size will increase over the following growing season.
What is the difference between this and a White Wizard?
Look at the stems. A White Knight has dark maroon to purple stems and leaf stalks, flushed pinky red on new growth. A White Wizard has plain green stems with no red at all. A White Princess sits between them with green stems carrying pink speckling. They are three different plants at three different prices, and the stems are the reliable way to tell.
Can I grow one from seed?
No. The variegation is chimeral, meaning it lives in the arrangement of cell layers at the growing tip rather than in a gene that passes to seed. Seed from a White Knight grows up plain green. Anything sold as White Knight seed is not what it claims to be.
Why is it so much more expensive than a plain philodendron?

That combination limits how fast supply can grow. Prices have fallen considerably as the propagated population increased, and will likely keep doing so.
Should I mist it?
No. Misting raises humidity for a few minutes and then it is gone, and water sitting in the crown and leaf joints encourages fungal spotting and gives thrips somewhere pleasant to be. If you want to raise humidity, group plants together, move it to a brighter bathroom, or run a humidifier.
